Freshwater Platys
Vibrant, active and wonderfully undemanding - Platys add effortless colour and movement to any peaceful community aquarium.
Platys are small, peaceful fish known for their impressive variety of colours and patterns. Reaching around 5 cm (2”) and living for 2-3 years, they grow quickly and thrive in well-maintained aquariums.
Platies are prolific breeders and exceptionally hardy, making them one of the most forgiving freshwater tropical fish for beginners. Their confident but gentle nature suits any community tank with similarly sized, peaceful species.
Platy Care
Platys are a genuinely low-maintenance fish. They tolerate a wide range of water conditions and are not known to suffer from any unique illnesses, responding well to standard treatments should problems like fin rot or white spot arise. Almost all platy types are similar in size and temperament, with colour and pattern being the key differences. Popular species include the Hawaiian Variatus Platy, Sunset Platy, Red Wagtail Platy and the Red Mickey Mouse Platy. For great value, explore our assorted Platy bundles.
Platys Natural Habitat
Platys originate from Central America, particularly Northern Honduras, Guatemala and Southern Mexico. In the wild they are found in a variety of freshwater environments, from flowing rivers to stagnant swamps and even temporary pools. Their ability to thrive in such varied waters speaks to their impressive hardiness.
Platys Behaviour & Compatibility
Platys are not strict shoaling fish but are happiest in small groups, with a minimum of three recommended. Although peaceful, males can be persistent breeders, so aim for two to three females per male. They mix well with other calm species such as Dwarf Gouramis, Swordtails, Neon Tetras and Cherry Barbs.
Platys Tank Set-up Tips
-
Tank
Because of their small size and relaxed nature, platys do well in modest tanks, though a minimum of 38 litres (10 gallons) is recommended. As social fish, keep them in groups of three or more, with additional females if you plan on breeding. A second 38-litre tank can be useful for raising fry. Since platys spend most of their time in the mid and upper parts of the tank, longer aquariums are preferable.

Base
Platys do not rely on any special substrate. You may choose based on the needs of other fish or personal preference. Small gravel is an easy-to-clean, practical option.
-
Foliage
Although they enjoy open swimming space, platys appreciate a planted freshwater aquarium for shelter — particularly important if breeding, as fry rely on cover to avoid predation. Add aquarium decorations such as driftwood or rocks with small hiding spaces. Plants like Java Moss and Hornwort work beautifully.
-
Water
With their natural tolerance for varied conditions, platys manage well across a broad water range. For best results — especially for breeding — aim for 18-25°C (64-77°F). Depending on your climate, a heater may be necessary.
Keep pH between 5.5-7.8 and hardness between 1-15 dGH. A reliable testing kit is invaluable for monitoring your tank.
Ensure proper filtration and carry out regular water changes (20% weekly or 40% fortnightly). Vacuum the substrate regularly and treat any tap water before adding it back to the tank.
Feeding
Platys are omnivores, feeding in the wild on algae, plant matter, microorganisms, insect larvae and fish eggs. In the aquarium, offer quality flakes or pellets, along with occasional frozen or freeze-dried foods. Vegetables such as cucumber or lettuce are beneficial. For fry, crushed hard-boiled egg yolk, brine shrimp nauplii and similar protein-rich foods work extremely well. Adults generally only need feeding once daily.
