Freshwater crabs can live for 2 to 3 years, though their lifespan can be longer with proper care. Factors like water quality, tank environment, and diet play a significant role in how long they live. Providing a stable, clean environment and a suitable diet will help them thrive.

Freshwater crabs are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. In the aquarium, they can be fed high-quality pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. They also enjoy plant matter, so adding blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or peas will help provide a balanced diet. It's important not to overfeed them, as excess food can lead to poor water quality.

There are several species of freshwater crabs, each with unique behaviours and care needs. Common species include the Thai Devil Crab, Fiddler Crab, and the Vampire Crab however in Australia we mainly see the Freshwater Darwin Crab. These species differ in terms of water conditions and size, but they all require a mix of land and water areas to thrive.

Freshwater crabs vary in size depending on the species. Smaller species like the Fiddler Crab typically reach around 5 cm in width, while larger species such as the Thai Devil Crab can grow up to 10 cm. Ensure that your tank is large enough to accommodate their growth, especially for the larger species.

Yes, most freshwater crabs are tropical and require warm water temperatures between 24°C and 28°C. A heater is essential to maintain a stable environment, particularly in regions with fluctuating room temperatures. They can tolerate slight temperature fluctuations, but a heater is necessary for long-term health.

Freshwater crabs need both water and land areas in their tank. A minimum of 40 L (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group. The tank should have a shallow water level (no deeper than 10–15 cm) to ensure they can easily climb out of the water. Provide rocks, driftwood, and plants to offer hiding spots and climbing areas. A secure lid is important, as crabs are known to escape if given the opportunity. A gentle filter will help maintain water quality, but strong currents should be avoided as they can stress the crabs.

Freshwater crabs can live with certain species of fish, but they should be kept with other peaceful species that won't bother them. Smaller fish may be at risk of being nipped or eaten, especially by larger crabs. Suitable tank mates include tetras, small catfish, and peaceful shrimp. Avoid keeping them with aggressive fish or larger species that could intimidate the crabs.

In many species of freshwater crabs, males tend to have larger claws (especially in species like Fiddler Crabs, where one claw is noticeably bigger than the other). Females usually have smaller, more equally sized claws. In some species, the female's abdomen may appear more rounded when carrying eggs. During mating, males may also display more vibrant colours or specific postures to attract females.
