Cichlids can live anywhere from 5 to 15 years, depending on the species and care they receive. Some species, like larger African cichlids, may live even longer, while smaller varieties tend to have slightly shorter lifespans. Proper water quality, a balanced diet, and regular maintenance are key to ensuring they live a full life.

Cichlids are generally omnivores, though their diet can vary depending on the species. In general, they can be fed high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and a variety of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Many cichlids also enjoy plant matter, so you can supplement their diet with vegetables like spinach, peas, or algae wafers.

Cichlids are a diverse family of fish, with several popular types, including:

  • American Cichlids: This group includes species like the Jaguar Cichlid, Oscar, and the Electric Blue Acara. American cichlids are often known for their vibrant colours and aggressive personalities, making them best suited for larger aquariums with sturdy tank mates.
  • Lake Malawi Cichlids: Known for their striking colours and active behaviours, Lake Malawi cichlids, such as the Mbuna and Peacocks, require specific water conditions, including alkaline water and high pH. They can be territorial and should be kept with other peaceful species that can handle their aggression.
  • Lake Tanganyika Cichlids: Known for their peaceful and territorial nature, species like Frontosa, Tropheus, Julidochromis and others are found in Lake Tanganyika. These cichlids are more tolerant of a variety of tank mates but still prefer well-maintained, stable water conditions.
  • Other African Lakes Cichlids: This category includes cichlids from lakes like Lake Victoria. These cichlids often require similar conditions to those from Lake Malawi, including warm water, high pH, and proper tank set-up to mimic their natural environment.

Cichlids vary greatly in size depending on the species. Small species, such as the Electric Blue Acara, can grow up to 10 cm, while larger species like the Oscar can reach up to 35 cm. For larger cichlids, you'll need a bigger tank to accommodate their growth. Always research your specific species for size requirements.

Yes, most cichlids are tropical fish and need a stable water temperature between 24°C and 28°C. A heater is essential to maintain the right temperature and ensure your cichlids remain healthy and active. Some species, such as those from Lake Tanganyika, prefer slightly cooler conditions, but a heater is still typically required for stability.

A minimum of 100 L is recommended for a small group of cichlids. Larger species may require even more space. Cichlids from African lakes, like Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika, prefer slightly alkaline water with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5. It's essential to provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, caves, and driftwood, as cichlids can be territorial. Additionally, proper filtration is crucial to maintain water quality, as cichlids are messy eaters. Substrate options such as fine gravel or sand are typically preferred for these species.

Cichlids can live with other fish, but care should be taken when choosing tank mates. Many cichlids, particularly those from Lake Malawi, are territorial and may become aggressive towards other species. American cichlids, like Oscars, can be quite aggressive and should be kept with larger, more robust tank mates. African cichlids from Lake Tanganyika are generally more peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful species, but it's still important to avoid overly small or delicate fish. Always ensure your tank is large enough to accommodate the personalities of your cichlids.

Differentiating between male and female cichlids can be challenging in some species. Generally, males tend to be larger and more brightly coloured than females. In many species, males may also have more elongated fins or more pronounced fin extensions, especially during breeding seasons. In some species like the Oscar, females will have a rounder body, particularly when they're carrying eggs.
